Fear or Social Anxiety and Reviewing Ways to Cope With It

According to the correspondent of Iran Book News Agency (IBNA) in Mashhad, Tayebeh Taghipour, during the series of book-reading sessions ‘Innovation Afternoons’ at Mashhad Innovation Factory, reviewed and critiqued Julie Smith’s book ‘Why Has Nobody Told Me This Before?’, stating that: This book has a practical and self-help-based approach to mental health.

She continued: In this work, Julie Smith emphasizes the importance of understanding fear, identifying its triggers, and developing strategies for its effective management.

She further examined the concept of fear and stated: Fear or social anxiety is a powerful emotion that arises in response to perceived danger, whether real or imagined. Fear is a survival mechanism that prepares us to confront threats.

She considered the body’s perception of threat as one of the reasons for the onset of fear and added: Fear has many effects on the body; the activation of the sympathetic nervous system causes numerous physiological changes. In such situations, we often experience an increased heart rate, our breathing quickens. Our sweating and muscle tension also increase. These physiological changes help the body cope with the threat, whether by fighting or fleeing.

Tayebeh Taghipour, referring to chronic fear, said: If fear is continuously activated, it can have serious negative effects on physical and mental health. Chronic fear can lead to anxiety, depression, sleep problems, digestive problems, and a weakened immune system.
