Poetry as an Instant; Profound Meaning is Scarce in Today’s Poetry
In an interview with Mehr News Agency, a literary critic examined the state of contemporary Iranian poetry, stating that profound and instantaneous meaning is less commonly observed in modern poems.
Referring to the evolution of Persian poetry, he emphasized that in the past, poets sought to convey deep concepts and hidden layers of meaning, but today, there is an increased tendency towards simplicity and superficiality.
Challenges of Contemporary Poetry
- Moving away from refined language and leaning towards colloquial speech
- Lack of philosophical and profound thoughts
- Repetition of themes and clichés
The critic added: “Poetry should not merely be a play on words; rather, it should strike the reader’s mind and provoke thought.”
He suggested that young poets should take the study of philosophy and literary history seriously to enrich their works and draw inspiration from successful examples of world poetry.
Finally, he expressed hope that with greater attention to content depth, Persian poetry will once again witness growth and flourishing.
