Discourses on the Philosophy of Literature and Sociology of Literature

A session titled ‘Discourses on the Philosophy of Literature and Sociology of Literature’ will be held with the presence of Dr. Asghar Dadbeh and Dr. Iraj Shahbazi on Thursday, December 4th, at Iran’s City of Philosophy.

The philosophy of literature and the sociology of literature are two important and related branches of literary studies, each approaching the phenomenon of ‘literature’ from a distinct perspective. The philosophy of literature is a branch of philosophy that addresses fundamental questions regarding the nature, value, and function of literature. Key questions it explores include: What constitutes literature? Where is the demarcation line between a literary and a non-literary text? Is literature defined by its formal characteristics (e.g., use of metaphor) or by its function (e.g., creating an aesthetic experience)? What is literary value? What criteria determine a ‘good’ literary work? Is this value intrinsic (inherent in the work itself) or a construct of the reader’s mind and cultural context? What is the relationship between literature and truth? Can literature reveal a truth about the world or the human condition, or is it merely a form of fabrication and imagination? How does this truth differ from scientific truth?

Conversely, the sociology of literature views literature not as an independent phenomenon, but as an integral part of the social context. This branch investigates the reciprocal relationship between literature and society. Both the philosophy of literature and sociology, as dynamic disciplines, can engage in mutually beneficial interaction. Certain approaches within the philosophy of literature can even align with the principles of literary sociology.

During this session, Dr. Asghar Dadbeh will discuss the philosophy of literature, while Dr. Iraj Shahbazi will deliver a speech on the sociology of literature.

Iran’s City of Philosophy is situated at Unit 3, No. 5, Goldan Alley, Nelson Mandela Boulevard.
