Zohreh Maskani’s New Short Story Collection Unveiled at Vazn-e Donya Library
The short story collection “The Ones We Didn’t Know”, the latest work by Zohreh Maskani, was unveiled at the Vazn-e Donya Library in the presence of a group of writers, critics, and figures from the fields of culture and art; a work comprising 12 short stories that presents readers with a fresh storytelling experience by narrating a single event from two different perspectives.
The unveiling ceremony for the book “The Ones We Didn’t Know”, the latest adult short story collection by Zohreh Maskani, was held on the afternoon of Wednesday, October 1, 2026, at the Vazn-e Donya Library, with a gathering of cultural and artistic figures and book enthusiasts.
This work, which contains 12 short stories across 132 pages and is priced at 400,000 Tomans published by Pelat Publication, is now available for purchase by enthusiasts through the Iran-Ketab website.
The structure of the book is built upon a specific narrative form; in such a way that in each story, a single event is narrated from two different viewpoints by two distinct narrators, an approach that forms the core and formal characteristic of the work.
At this session, Mostafa Alizadeh, the secretary of the meeting, referring to the interpretable nature of events, stated that every simple occurrence around us can transform into a multitude of different stories by changing the observer’s perspective.
In this regard, Asadollah Amraei, a veteran critic and translator, emphasizing that reviewing and rewriting subjects has a precedent in world literature, pointed to Raymond Carver’s story “Cathedral” and his wife’s account of the same event.
He praised the story “The Woman Who Became a Fish” in the book *The Ones We Didn’t Know* and the author’s use of personification in character development, describing this collection as a readable experience that can be revisited with pleasure.
Amraei also, in another part of his remarks, criticizing the current state of book publishing in the country and the drop in print runs to meager figures, emphasized the necessity of supporting cultural spaces and promoting reading.
Subsequently, Mirtahir Mazloumi, our country’s actor and voice actor, who read excerpts from the book along with the author, comparing the atmosphere of the work to multi-layered narratives in cinema, spoke of a flowing poetic surrealism within the text of this story collection and emphasized that genuine emotion in literature emerges when there is a correct analysis of the subject.
In the concluding part of the session, Fereydoun Amozadeh Khalili, a writer and journalist, referring to the metaphor of the kaleidoscope device in Italo Calvino’s book *If on a winter’s night a traveler*, praised the housing idea in the multiplication of subjects and expressed hope that this path would lead to the creation of larger fictional worlds.
Also, Mohsen Hejari and Mohammad Kazem Akhavan, pointing to the author’s lived experiences and her courage in tackling novel subjects, considered this book, alongside works like Murakami’s “Samsa in Love”, to be indicative of a successful literary experience.
The event concluded with the presence of writers such as Azadeh Hosseini, Farahnaz Alizadeh, Hourieh Hafezian, and a discussion on the necessity of sustaining this fresh perspective in adult fiction.
