Operation Blossom; a billion-dollar deal that changed the fate of the Shah and the future of Iran
This work, written in the style of a spy novel, delves into the realms of judgment, friendship, betrayal, and ultimately, the concept of ‘return to self’ within the turbulent world of that era. By addressing important and less-told events of that year, the author removes the mask from hidden relationships and widespread deceptions that ultimately led to profound social transformation and the Islamic Revolution.
At the center of this story, we encounter a semi-modern society entangled in Eastern and Western espionage. The Shah of Iran, facing protests and a climate of suppression and oppression, sought to solidify and maintain his authoritarian position through extensive oil sales to the United States in exchange for the purchase of vast amounts of military hardware. These arms, acquired through deceptive contracts by the Americans, largely never reached Iran and indirectly became a source of crisis.
The influential character in the story is an ‘Anusim’ or ‘secret Jew’ who has been at the heart of social and political changes for years. An individual who has hidden his identity and even brought his son into the service of the dominant regime. This eventually leads to a mission in Operation Blossom, a joint collaboration between Iran and Israel to build long-range missiles. An operation where Israel used a billion dollars of its arms value in exchange for a large Iranian oil deal, but in reality, it was a major deception and fraud against the Shah. That is, contrary to the perceptions of the Shah and his ministers, Iran only gained access to outdated technology during this project, while Israel, for its own benefit, received Iranian oil and built its new generation of specific weapons. Because of this, the main character faces sensitive and deceptive circumstances and difficult choices that ultimately reveal his true identity and internal challenges.
The theme of the novel ‘Tamarrud’ directly aligns with the theme of the Islamic Revolution. Because this novel attempts to depict the concept of ‘return to self.’ A concept that reminds the individual trapped in a semi-modern society that within oneself and in interaction with society, one must rebel against the commands of exploitative forces and return to one’s origin and identity. Such a statement has two aspects. First, disobedience to divine commands, and second, disobedience to Satan and demonic forces that manifest as dominating and totalitarian powers. This novel also addresses both conceptual aspects.
‘Tamarrud’ is not only a historical spy novel but also a deep reflection on identity, moral choices, and the meaning of loyalty. The characters in this story try to decide between their hidden and true identities and search for truth and freedom in the world of deceit.
