Book ‘The Critic as Artist’ Published

According to the Iran Book News Agency (IBNA), this work is considered one of Wilde’s most important writings in the field of aesthetic philosophy and art criticism.

The book’s text is structured as a dialogue between two fictional characters, Gilbert and Ernest; where the discussion about the nature of art criticism, its relationship with creativity, and the position of the contemplative life versus the active life forms the main axis of the author’s reflections. “The Critic as Artist” was first published in 1891 as part of the collection of essays “Intentions,” and the current version is an edited text of those same essays.

In this dialogue, Wilde, by questioning the usual boundaries between art and criticism, emphasizes the idea that the critical force is not merely a reflection of a work of art but possesses independent creativity and can play a constructive role in shaping the meaning and value of a work. From his perspective, criticism is an artistic act, and he considers a life based on thought superior to mere action.

The first print of “The Critic as Artist,” in 127 pages and 300 copies, priced at 195,000 Tomans, was released to the publishing market by Pille Publications in the summer of 1404 (Persian calendar year). The publication of this book provides a new opportunity for enthusiasts of art philosophy and readers of Oscar Wilde’s works to encounter the lesser-seen aspects of his aesthetic ideas.
