Madame de Staël’s Studies on 18th Century German Literature and Art Published

According to a reporter from the Iran Book News Agency (IBNA), the book “Germany” by Madame de Staël, which explores the cultural, ethical, and artistic similarities and differences between the nations of France and Germany during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, has recently been translated and published by Chehrzad Publishing.

This book includes chapters such as “A Historical Perspective on German Culture and Literature in the 18th Century,” “An Overview of the Most Important German Literary Figures,” “Founders of Criticism and Historical Research in Germany: Lessing and Winckelmann,” and “Schiller and Goethe.” The first section covers general observations, the image of Germany: geographical manifestations of culture, a brief look at the behavior and character of Germans, the inherent structure of the German language and its impact on the essence of dialogue, a fleeting journey through the main periods of German literary history, the alienation between French and German literature, and Weimar. In the second section, readers are introduced to Klopstock and Wieland, two of Germany’s most important literary figures.

Behnam Chehrzad, the book’s translator, states in a part of the introduction: “The book ‘Germany,’ as a journey into the literary and cultural context of the Germanic peoples, provided a first-hand image of pure and noble German thought and served as an ideal bridge for the French to understand the Germans. It shone as an important reference throughout the 19th century, so much so that Goethe later wrote about it: ‘This book is a great machine that has created a vital and useful breach in the long Great Wall of estrangement between us and the French, enabling the inhabitants across the Rhine and the Channel to become acquainted with the Germans and grant us a worthy influence throughout Western Europe.’ Madame de Staël’s ‘Germany,’ especially a selection of its most important parts in this context, opens a door to acquaintance with the pristine German literature of the 18th century before its amalgamation with the rest of Europe, and perhaps even indirectly should introduce Persian readers to classical 18th and 19th-century German authors including Musäus, Fouqué, Eichendorff, Grillparzer, Arnim, Hoffmann, the Brothers Grimm, and others…”

Chehrzad Publishing recently released this book, translated by Behnam Chehrzad, in 100 pages and priced at 235,000 Tomans.
