Review and Analysis of Two Critical Books on the Historiography of Science
According to the Iran Book News Agency (IBNA), the first session of the Astanah Institute’s series of programs, aimed at familiarizing participants with the history of ancient and modern sciences, will be dedicated to reviewing two critical books on the history of science in Iran and the Islamic world: “Exaggeration in the History of Science in Iran and Islam” and “How Did We Not Become What We Are?”.
Dr. Ebrahim Azadegan from the Philosophy of Science Department at Sharif University, Dr. Hanif Ghalandari from the Research Institute for the History of Science at the University of Tehran, and Dr. Amir Mohammad Gomini from the Research Institute for the History of Science at the University of Tehran will speak at this session.
In this session, attendees will be introduced to perspectives that critique common exaggerations and understatements, including the incorrect notion of the decline of sciences after the sixth century AH and the overattribution of modern achievements to Islamic scholars.
The emphasis of this session is on explaining the historical continuity of ancient sciences up to the Qajar and Ottoman eras, and understanding the real distinctions between traditional and modern sciences.
Those interested in this session can attend on Tuesday, November 9, 2025, at 5:30 PM, at the Astanah Institute located in Tehran, Ghaem Magham Farahani Street, corner of Aarabi 1, 2nd floor, Cafe Patch.
Admission is free and open to the public.
