Registration of Bayazid Bastami and Allameh Tabatabai on UNESCO’s Commemoration List
According to the Iranian Book News Agency (IBNA), the Director General of Iran’s National Commission for UNESCO, Hojjatullah Ayyoubi, announced the successful registration of two prominent Persian figures, Bayazid Bastami and Allameh Tabatabai, on UNESCO’s Commemoration List for 2023-2024. This achievement marks a significant step in recognizing Iran’s rich cultural and intellectual heritage on a global scale.
Ayyoubi stated, “The tireless efforts of the National Commission for UNESCO, in collaboration with various cultural and academic institutions, have led to this valuable accomplishment. Bayazid Bastami, the eminent Persian Sufi mystic, and Allameh Mohammad Hossein Tabatabai, the revered Shia scholar and philosopher, are figures whose profound contributions have shaped Islamic thought and Persian culture.”
He emphasized that the inclusion of these figures on UNESCO’s list provides an opportunity to introduce their works and ideas to a wider international audience, fostering a deeper understanding of Iran’s intellectual legacy. “This recognition will encourage further research and academic discourse on their lives and teachings, highlighting their relevance in contemporary global dialogues,” Ayyoubi added.
The Commemoration List is part of UNESCO’s program to celebrate the anniversaries of historical events and the remembrance of eminent personalities that are significant to world history and culture. The inclusion of Bastami and Tabatabai underscores their enduring impact and universal appeal.
