The publishing market is a victim of the non-economic perspective and unprofessional behavior of publishers
The managing director of Logos Publishing, speaking to the Iran Book News Agency (IBNA), said: “The publishing market is a victim of the non-economic perspective and unprofessional behavior of publishers. Unfortunately, most publishers are not professional and view publishing as a secondary job, and this lack of a professional and economic outlook has caused significant harm to the publishing industry.”
Hamed Abbasi added: “Most of our publishers lack a business plan for their operations. They don’t know who their audience is and what books they need. They don’t have a specific strategy for production and distribution, and they don’t use scientific methods for book pricing.”
He continued: “In our country, publishing is seen as a cultural activity, not an economic one. While publishing is indeed a cultural act, it is also an industry that requires economic principles to be managed. This non-economic perspective has led to many publishers facing financial problems and being unable to continue their work.”
Abbasi stated: “The non-professional behavior of publishers is another problem in the publishing market. Many publishers do not respect copyright, publish low-quality books, and do not have a proper relationship with authors, translators, and distributors. These behaviors have diminished public trust in publishers and have harmed the publishing market.”
The managing director of Logos Publishing emphasized: “To solve the problems in the publishing market, we need to change our perspective on publishing. We must accept that publishing is an industry that requires professional and economic management. Publishers must be professional and adhere to ethical principles. They must have a business plan for their operations and use scientific methods for production, distribution, and pricing.”
He concluded: “The government can also play a role in solving these problems. The government can support professional publishers and create a competitive environment in the publishing market. It can also help improve the quality of books and increase public trust in publishers by strengthening copyright laws and monitoring the performance of publishers.”
