Cyrus the Achaemenid Under the Microscope of an Ancient History Professor from the University of Wisconsin

Recently, the book “Cyrus the Great: A Life from Beginning to End” was translated into Persian by Dr. Ata Jalayer Taymuri and published by Farhang Moaser Publishers. We spoke with the translator about the importance and features of this historical work.

What is the primary significance of this book, and how does it differ from other works about Cyrus the Great?

The main importance of this book lies in its scholarly and non-ideological approach. Many books about Cyrus are either overly nationalistic or, conversely, attempt to diminish his historical significance. This work, however, is based on primary historical sources, including Greek texts, Babylonian chronicles, and archaeological findings. The author presents a balanced and evidence-based account of Cyrus’s life and reign, making it a reliable resource for those interested in ancient history.

What can you tell us about the author?

The author is a history professor at the University of Wisconsin and a specialist in ancient history. He has written numerous books in the “A Life from Beginning to End” series on historical figures such as Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, and the Spartans, all of which are known for their academic rigor and accessibility.

How long did the translation process take?

The translation took approximately one year. Due to the specialized nature of the content, it required careful research and cross-referencing of names, places, and historical events to ensure accuracy and consistency.

Who is the intended audience for this book?

This book is written for both the general public and specialists. While it is academically sound, the author has used a clear and engaging style that makes it accessible to anyone with an interest in history. It avoids jargon and presents complex historical events in a straightforward manner.

Do you have plans to translate other historical books?

Yes, I am currently working on the translation of another significant book about the Achaemenid army, and I hope to continue making important historical works available to Persian-speaking readers.
