Friendship: An Opportunity for Understanding Self and Other
Dr. Mahdi Ghomi: Friendship Provides an Opportunity for Understanding Self and Other
IBNA: Dr. Mahdi Ghomi discussed his new book, “The Philosophy of Friendship,” saying: “In this book, I examine friendship from philosophical, psychological, and sociological perspectives. Friendship is not just a social relationship, but a deep human connection that allows individuals to better understand themselves and others.”
He added: “From a philosophical standpoint, friendship provides a unique space for self-discovery. When we are friends with someone, we see a reflection of ourselves in them, which helps us to understand our own values, beliefs, and emotions more deeply. This reciprocal relationship fosters personal growth and moral development.”
Ghomi further explained: “From a psychological perspective, friendship plays a crucial role in mental health. Having sincere friends reduces feelings of loneliness, stress, and anxiety. Friends provide emotional support, empathy, and a sense of belonging, which are essential for human well-being.”
He continued: “Sociologically, friendship helps to build a stronger and more cohesive society. When people form strong bonds of friendship, they are more likely to cooperate, trust each other, and work towards common goals. This strengthens social capital and creates a more harmonious community.”
Ghomi also addressed the challenges of maintaining friendships in modern society: “In today’s fast-paced world, people often struggle to maintain deep and meaningful friendships. Social media, while connecting us virtually, sometimes prevents us from forming face-to-face connections. It’s important to invest time and effort in cultivating genuine friendships.”
He concluded: “The book emphasizes that true friendship requires empathy, trust, mutual respect, and a willingness to understand and support each other. It’s a journey of continuous learning and growth, both for oneself and for the friend. Ultimately, friendship is one of the most valuable human experiences, enriching our lives in profound ways.”
