In part of the introduction to this book, we read: Writing about Shahnameh does not require bravery; rather, to investigate and explore it, one must first acquire various kinds of knowledge in fields such as mythology, epic, linguistics, history, sociology, anthropology, poetry, music, astronomy, and more. Then, one must wash their hands and enter the interior of this mountainous book.
Also on the cover of this book, there is a curtain by Master Mansour Vafaei (born 1313); a painter who connects color and narrative from the heart of coffee houses to the spirit of the Shahnameh. In this beautiful image of the story of Rostam and Sohrab, epic and sorrow collide; as if the strike of the mace and the burning heart are gathered in one glance. Vafaei, with his passionate pen, does not just paint Ferdowsi’s story; he brings it back to life, for the eyes of today and the heart of forever Iran.
