Jahangiri’s unheard account of Zarif’s unaccepted resignation

According to Khabar Online news agency, a section of Es’haq Jahangiri’s memoir book, titled ‘In Thought of Iran’, states that on February 25, 2019 (Esfand 6, 1397), Syrian President Bashar al-Assad traveled to Iran unannounced. Zarif, who at the time was responsible as Foreign Minister for the complex frontline negotiations between Iran and the West, remained unaware of this meeting and learned about the situation the next morning.

According to Fararu, Jahangiri wrote in his book: ‘I spoke with Mr. Vaezifar about this. Apparently, Sardar Soleimani informed the President that ‘you have a meeting with someone at 11 o’clock,’ but the President’s office did not know who the guest was, and for this reason, the Foreign Minister remained unaware of the matter. When Mr. Zarif learned of the situation, he resigned and was very angry. He said they want to show the world that I am ineffective.’
